Pauline Slaven

As a full-time carer for her husband, it isn't always easy for Pauline Slaven to find time for herself but thanks to a local volunteering project, she's feeling much healthier and positive.

Finding herself a bit isolated, not  doing any exercise and relying on a 'typical stodgy Scottish diet', Pauline got involved with a local allotment project a couple of years ago.  The experience has resulted in her eating healthier, being more active and feeling much better about herself.

Pauline, 42, explained: "Like a lot of people in Glasgow, I don't have a garden at home but I got involved with the allotments at the Hidden Gardens and it's changed the way I look at food.

"I eat a lot more fruit and veg now and cook more from scratch, making up things like soups and veg curries.

"It's also made me more active.  I'm now volunteering here twice a week helping with the gardening and it's good to be outside doing something.  It's made me feel great and now I do other things to keep active, like walking to and from places instead of taking the bus.

"My sister and I have gone cycling and I have also taken part in a cycling class at Bellahouston park run by the local council.  It's not something I would have thought to do before but it was great.

"I don't let the weather put me off, if you only went outside when it was sunny, you wouldn't be out much in Scotland!

"Gardening and walking also help me empty my mind, it's good just to focus on something else for a while.  I'm also on a waiting list now for my own allotment so I can grow my own fruit and vegetables.

"I feel much better than I did a couple of years ago and it's just wee things like the gardening and eating a bit better that have made the difference.  I'm a different person."
