Simple Meal Ideas

Lunch

You can pack a lot of goodness into a packed lunch. Shop-made options are often high in salt, fat and sugar, so why not make your own? Let your imagination run riot and take some inspiration from our healthy lunch menu ideas - it'll also save you money.

Salad sandwich

Sandwiches

Make the filling thrilling. Start with granary or wholemeal bread then add Edam or low fat cream cheese, tuna, tinned salmon, lean ham, chicken or turkey. Try to avoid pates, salami and other high fat fillings. Tomato, cucumber or salad will stop your sandwich being dry, so you won't need to add spread or mayonnaise.

Chicken wrap and salad

Alternatives to Bread

Try your favourite fillings in wholemeal wraps or wholemeal pitta breads. They're just as tasty and help keep lunchtimes varied.

Salads

Adding pasta or potatoes can make a salad really filling. Adding tomatoes, peppers, carrots or sweetcorn adds colour and flavour. They'll also count towards your 5 a day. And if you’re using a salad dressing, stick to a low fat one.

Baked potato with tuna (small version)

Baked Potato

A legend in its own lunchtime, but better to avoid butter or spreads. Try cottage cheese, tuna and sweetcorn or baked beans instead. We've put together a video to show just how easy it is to prepare or cook potatoes, click here to view.

Soup with bread

Soup

Prepare to be bowl-ed over. Vegetable soups and those rich with beans or lentils, are healthy, hearty and wholesome. Soups like chunky vegetable, mushroom or just good old fashioned tomato soup also count towards your 5 a day - keep an eye on those salt levels though, especially on tinned soup. The other great thing about soup is that it's cheap, easy to microwave and very warming on a cold winter's day. Click here to try our dead easy soup recipe.

Pasta

Pasta

No matter the shape, it's always easy, tasty and filling. Try tomatoes or vegetable sauces instead of creamy and cheesy ones. If you’re topping it off with a strong cheese like mature cheddar, grate it finely so that you use less but still get maximum flavour.
