Simple Meal Ideas

Breakfast

As you probably won't have eaten for nearly 12 hours, having breakfast is more important than most of us realise. It will increase your energy, your concentration and help stop you from snacking mid-morning. So try to make time for it every day. Our breakfast meal ideas give you a healthy choice to try.

Wholemeal bread

Bread

Toasted or fresh. Your choice. Try wholemeal or granary as they're higher in fibre and tastier. It's best to avoid too much spread, but if you can't, low fat options are best.

Cereal with milk

Cereal

Aisle after aisle, the choice is endless. So which are the healthiest ones? Well, wholegrain options are definitely the best as they’re full of fibre. Take time to check the label for salt and sugar levels though.

Porridge

Porridge

A Scottish staple for years and for good reason. It's tasty, easy, cheap, can be cooked in the microwave and is really filling. Forget sugar or salt though, try topping it off with some chopped fresh fruit instead. Click here to try our delicious porridge recipe.

Orange juice

Fruit Juice

A glass of unsweetened fruit juice counts as one portion of your 5 a day.  Remember, fruit juice also contains a type of sugar that can be damaging for teeth, so it is best taken at mealtimes. Breakfast is a great time to drink it.

Milk

Milk

Amazingly, lower fat milks such as semi-skimmed are higher in some vitamins and minerals than full fat milk. And just as tasty on cereals or in your morning cuppa. For kids under two, full fat milk is best.

Scrambled egg on toast

Cooked Breakfasts

Once in a while, a cooked breakfast can be a delicious treat. Best to grill, not fry, and poach or scramble your eggs. A grilled tomato, or portion of mushrooms or baked beans can also count as one of your 5 a day.

Fruit salad

1 out of 5 Fruit

In a hurry? Fruit is always a quick and tasty option. Fresh, tinned or dried fruits all count towards your 5 a day. Dried fruit packs quite a lot of sugar so always best eaten with other foods at mealtimes and remember to give your teeth a good brush afterwards.
