Here's to healthy drinking

Drinking alcohol will always carry some risks to health. However, if we drink within the daily recommended guidelines, the risks to health are very low and there could even be some benefits to health. Here's a handful of tips to help you enjoy your favourite tipple.

Beer

Count Calories

Be aware of how many calories are in a drink. On average, there are 200 calories in a large (250ml) glass of wine and 250 calories in a pint of strong lager.

Eat a Meal

Eat a Meal

Eat a meal before you drink, as food helps absorb alcohol and limits how quickly it gets into your blood.

Water

Drink Water

Drinking plenty of water throughout the night will keep you fresh and is also a great way to cut down your chances of a hangover. Remember, drinking your daily recommendation of 6 to 8 glasses a day will not only stop you getting dehydrated, but also increase your concentration and improve your short-term memory. As an alternative to plain water, why not try sparkling water or add unsweetened squash, fruit juice for flavour.

Keep Tabs

Keep Tabs

If you're drinking at home, keep an eye on how much you've had. Try measuring your drinks, so you can compare this to a night out.

Have a bath

Try Something Else

Try another way to relax. Having a bath, watching a movie, doing some activity or going for a walk are all excellent ways to relax.
